Lin J. Hymel

Lin Hymel is a partner with the firm and specializes in patent prosecution, client counseling, and patent reexamination pertaining to biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, chemistry, materials science, and medical devices. He has experience with a broad range of technologies, including proteins and nucleic acids used for therapy and diagnosis, specialized forms of microscopy, cardiovascular devices, cell culture, cancer genetics, vaccines, small molecule and polymer chemistry, textiles, catalysts, fuel cells, nanomaterials, and semiconductor materials.

Before joining WSGL, Dr. Hymel worked as a patent attorney for a large general practice law firm in Boston, an intellectual property law firm in Washington, D.C., and a major biotechnology company.

Dr. Hymel began his career as an academic scientist. He performed research and published in the areas of biochemistry, biophysics, pharmacology, and physiology, with emphasis on membrane transport systems and receptors, particularly as related to muscle physiology.

Dr. Hymel obtained a Bachelor of Science degree, summa cum laude with honors in Biology, from Tulane University. He was the recipient of a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship and earned a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from Vanderbilt University. He completed postdoctoral studies in Pharmacology at the University of Ulm, Germany and worked as Assistant Professor of Biophysics at the University of Linz, Austria and as Assistant Professor of Physiology at Tulane University School of Medicine. He also worked as a Scientific Review Administrator at the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Hymel received his J.D. degree from Georgetown University Law Center.

Dr. Hymel is admitted to practice in Massachusetts and Maryland and is a registered patent attorney with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. He is a member of the American Intellectual Property Association and the Boston Patent Law Association. Dr. Hymel was appointed as Co-Chair of the Chemical Practice Committee of the Boston Patent Law Association and was selected as a reviewer of grant and loan applications for the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center. He is fluent in the German language.
