Paul D. Sorkin

PAUL SORKIN is a partner with the firm and has over fifteen years of experience preparing, prosecuting and maintaining patent and trademark portfolios for corporations of all sizes as well as for individual inventors. He has extensive expertise in preparing patent applications in the software, electrical, electromechanical, and electronic arts. He has also prepared numerous pre-filing patentability studies, freedom to operate studies and has often been called upon to assess questions of patent validity and patent infringement. Mr Sorkin has also been involved in due diligence investigations to assess intellectual property portfolios in the course of mergers and acquisitions.

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Sorkin was a partner at another intellectual property law firm in Boston. Before that, Mr. Sorkin worked as an Associate General Counsel in the Patent Law Department at Sun Microsystems, Inc. for four years overseeing a portfolio of patents in areas including networking devices and storage systems. Earlier in his legal career, Mr. Sorkin was an associate patent attorney at intellectual property law firms located in Boston and Washington, DC.

Mr. Sorkin worked in the high tech industry for eight years before becoming a patent attorney. As a test and project engineer with Data General, Mr. Sorkin designed, implemented, and supported test equipment (hardware and software), reviewed product designs for testability and manufacturability, and coordinated test plans and capital spending budgets. Mr. Sorkin is able to apply his years of practical business and engineering expertise to the intellectual property matters he handles on behalf of his clients.

Mr. Sorkin holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering, with High Honors, from Rutgers University College of Engineering (1982) and a J.D., cum laude, from Suffolk University Law School (1993). His academic honors include Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu. Mr. Sorkin is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and is admitted to practice in Massachusetts. He is a member of the Boston Patent Law Association. Mr. Sorkin has been a guest lecturer on electrical patent claims drafting at Franklin Pierce Law Center, Concord, NH.
